Chuck Schumer Opposes SAVE Act Voter ID Legislation

Chuck Schumer criticized the SAVE Act voter ID legislation during an appearance on the CNN program State of the Union. He said Democratic lawmakers would work “tooth and nail” to block the measure.

Schumer also compared the proposal to historical racial segregation systems. He argued the legislation could prevent some voters from participating in elections.

The bill could eventually reach the desk of Donald Trump if it passes Congress. However, Schumer said Senate Democrats would try to stop the legislation.

Republican Support for SAVE Act Voter ID Legislation

Republican lawmakers strongly support the SAVE Act voter ID legislation. They say it would strengthen election security.

Supporters argue the law would ensure only eligible citizens vote in federal elections. Additionally, they believe it would address concerns about illegal voting.

During the debate, Schumer said Republicans want to exclude certain groups from voting. He claimed poor voters and voters of color could face difficulties obtaining identification.

Polling Data on Voter ID Requirements

However, polling data suggests strong public support for voter ID laws. An August 2025 survey by Pew Research Center reported that 83% of Americans support voter ID requirements.

The survey also showed support across racial groups. For example, 76% of Black respondents and 82% of Hispanic respondents supported photo identification for voting.

Meanwhile, Schumer argued that states already have their own voter ID laws. He warned about hypothetical scenarios involving federal monitoring at polling locations.

Debate Over Election Security and Enforcement

During the interview, Schumer said there is little evidence of voter fraud. He also criticized agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Republican lawmakers responded by defending enforcement of election laws. They argued the SAVE Act voter ID legislation would strengthen the rule of law.

Jason Smith said illegal immigrants are not allowed to vote in U.S. elections. He criticized proposals to limit enforcement near polling places.

House Vote and Political Reactions

The SAVE Act voter ID legislation previously passed the House with strong Republican support. Only one Democrat voted in favor of the measure.

That lawmaker was Henry Cuellar of Texas. He represents a border district where more than 70% of residents are Hispanic.

Observers say the vote highlights possible divisions inside the Democratic Party. Some districts appear to have different views on voter identification policies.
