Grenell Leaving Post As Head of Trump Kennedy Center Ahead of Renovations

Ric Grenell is set to transition out of his role as president of the Trump Kennedy Center on Monday, passing the position to Matt Floca, the center’s vice president of facilities operations. According to Axios, the change will be announced at a Board of Directors meeting at the White House, where the board is also expected to approve a two-year closure of the 54-year-old cultural venue for an extensive renovation.

Grenell, who has led the historic campus since February 2025, will continue to be involved with the organization as an unpaid consultant. Floca, who previously served as the associate director for sustainability and energy in the D.C. government, has already been receiving calls from President Trump to discuss potential changes to the center, including paint colors, seating arrangements, and the addition of marble, Axios noted further.

Trump, who is expected to attend Monday’s meeting, has developed a good rapport with Floca, which is significant as the Trump Kennedy Center prepares for the most ambitious transformation in its 54-year history.

Last month, Trump announced that the marble-clad building on the banks of the Potomac River will close in July for two years of what he referred to as “Construction, Revitalization, and Complete Rebuilding.” Congress approved $257 million in reconstruction funding last year through what he called a “big, beautiful bill,” providing substantial financial support for the project.

The president has committed to transforming the institution, promising a “new and spectacular Entertainment Complex” and a “Grand Reopening that will rival and surpass anything that has ever taken place at such a facility before.”

Trump praised Grenell ahead of Monday’s departure. “Ric Grenell has done an excellent job in helping to coordinate various elements of the Center during the transition period, and I want to thank him for the outstanding work he has done,” Trump wrote on social media.

The Trump Kennedy Center has hosted the annual honors awards and served as the venue for FIFA’s World Cup draw during Trump’s administration. Now, it will undergo a reconstruction that aligns with those ambitious goals.

Grenell continues to serve as Trump’s envoy for special missions, a role that has allowed him to travel worldwide and engage in some of the most significant diplomatic efforts of this administration. During Trump’s first term, Grenell held positions as the ambassador to Germany and as the acting director of national intelligence.

Democrats have criticized Trump’s renaming of the center as well as his continued involvement in trying to revitalize it, for some reason. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) went so far as to launch a personal attack on Grenell over the weekend:

Like a mob bust-out gone wrong, Trumpsters’ looting of the Kennedy Center has put it out of business, and now it needs to be “closed for renovations” as cover-up. No surprise he’s being replaced.

Grenell fired back in epic fashion. “Your buffoonery knows no limits,” he wrote on X in response to the criticism. “You sat silent while the place went into total disrepair. You sat silent while the staff was paid with monies designed to pay off the future $30 million loan coming due in 2030 because there was no money in the bank to pay salaries.”

Continuing, Grenell added: “You sat silent while corporations left because of the hard left woke programming. We fixed it. And we are doing the right thing to close the entire place in a few weeks to renovate it – because of your years of neglect. This Washington game of kicking the can down the road and never solving problems has ended with President Trump.”

He concluded: It doesn’t matter what you or the New York Times or CNN says. We are fixing the place that YOU ruined. It becomes a construction site for two years because you failed to keep up with the maintenance. And we have a world-class construction leader to do it the right way. You are welcome.”
